Meet LaMonica

Congresswoman LaMonica McIver represents New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

McIver, a lifelong public servant, is the first Black woman to represent NJ-10 and the youngest Black woman ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New Jersey. She is a member of the House Small Business and Homeland Security Committees. She is the co-chair of the Caucus on Black Women and Girls, and a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Congressional Black Caucus.

A Newark native, nonprofit founder, mother of two, and former Newark City Council president, McIver has prioritized advocating for the values and needs of New Jersey’s 10th during her time in Congress. She has been a champion for working people and on the front lines protecting people from the cruelty of the Trump administration.

Less than a year into her service in the House, McIver was pushed into the national spotlight for refusing to bend to ICE’s intimidation tactics aimed at her community and the Congresswoman herself. When the Trump administration threw baseless criminal charges at the Congresswoman for showing up to the Delaney Hall ICE facility in her New Jersey district to conduct oversight—her job—McIver did not flinch. As she fights this administration's weaponization of the Department of Justice and advocates for her community, McIver has emerged as one of the fiercest new voices in Congress.

Her nationally watched legal battle has not stopped her from delivering wins for New Jersey’s 10th. From securing millions for community project funding, to introducing bills to lift up small businesses, bring transparency to AI data center development and expand access to maternal health care, McIver is defining what community-centered leadership looks like for the next generation.

In 2026, with her first full term coming to a close, McIver welcomed a second daughter, making her only the 15th woman to give birth while serving in Congress, and the first from New Jersey. She shared her journey of giving birth and getting pregnant via IVF after a decade-long struggle with uterine fibroids and infertility in the hopes of breaking the stigma around maternal and reproductive healthcare—issues that the congresswoman has championed.

Congresswoman McIver represents New Jersey’s 10th district through and through, as she was born and raised in Newark’s Central Ward and still resides there with her family. Her journey to politics began at the age of 10, when she first began organizing for political campaigns. She is proudly a product of New Jersey schools, growing up attending Newark public schools and going on to get an undergraduate degree then a master’s degree from Bloomfield College and Seton Hall University, respectively.

From her roots in Newark to her rise as a national thought leader, McIver stands as a symbol of empowerment, leadership and transformative change—and her journey is only just beginning.
