McIver Speaks After Oral Arguments Outside of Courthouse

Unknown

NEWARK, NJ – Today, a federal court in Newark, New Jersey, heard oral arguments in the ongoing criminal case against Congresswoman LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) brought by the Trump administration. The court reserved ruling on the Congresswoman’s motions to dismiss, but instructed the government to take down certain public statements negatively describing Rep. McIver, and to provide additional discovery, such as video footage and government policies.

A transcript of Rep. McIver’s full remarks from the courthouse steps can be found below and video of Rep. McIver’s remarks can be found here.

Transcript - Rep. LaMonica McIver’s remarks outside of the courthouse today:

Good afternoon, everyone.

First of all, I want to thank all who are here—for all of my supporters who are here, my husband, my mom, my family. Thank you so much to my legal team. I'm super grateful to them.

Look, to all of the elected officials, to my mayor, to my first lady, to my two amazing colleagues who are still here, and my colleagues who were here who had to leave—three [colleagues] oh, my chairwoman, my chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus [is also here].

I want to thank you all for being here, for your support. It means so much to me.

Look, I'm super grateful for the judge. He listened a lot through this case. He had a lot of questions, and so I'm grateful for his duty.

But I want to be clear to everyone: This process has not stopped me from doing my job. This process is not going to stop me from doing my job.

I'm going to continue to show up to protect us, to protect the people of the 10th Congressional District, and of New Jersey, and better yet, of this country. Because we need protection, and we have to continue to hold this administration accountable.

We all know why this is happening. I'm clear why this is happening: It's because I was doing my job and I continue do so.

I'm not going to stop holding this administration accountable—not because someone appointed me to do it, but because the people of the 10th Congressional District elected me to do it.

I have a very unbreakable love and bond for the people that I represent, but more importantly, for the 10th District, for New Jersey, and for this country. And no one is going to get in the way of that.

So we're going to continue to see the process through. We are definitely confident in the process. We're confident in our judiciary system, and I'm going to continue doing what the people have elected me to do. So I thank you for being here, and let's continue to fight.

Let's continue to do the jobs that we all—we all—are assigned to do. Thank you.

Thank you.
