McIver Statement on Vote to Keep the Government Open

December 20, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ-10) released the following statement on her vote to keep the government open:

“After days of chaos and bending the knee to Elon Musk and Donald Trump, Republicans finally faced reality and did the bare minimum to help us keep the government open.

We had a bipartisan solution days ago, but the GOP wanted to let Elon play president, without any concern about the millions of Americans they were dragging into disarray. They were ready to halt Social Security payments, make our troops and federal employees work without pay, drag WIC and SNAP to a screeching halt, and make Americans’ lives worse, just to impress billionaires who wouldn’t be impacted by any of it.

After pressure from Democrats and the people back home, Republicans finally put a new bill on the floor. It delivers far less than our initial proposal, but it keeps our government open, keeps food assistance programs running and ensures families get paid ahead of the holidays.

I voted to keep our government open for the families in my district, but—if Republicans hadn’t interfered—we could have delivered more for them. We had a good bill and Republicans tanked it. Our government remains open, but the American people deserve better than these ridiculous games.”

Rep. LaMonica McIver represents New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District. Rep. McIver is the first Black woman to represent NJ-10 and the youngest ever to be elected to the United States House of Representatives from New Jersey. She is a member of the House Small Business and Homeland Security Committees.
