WASHINGTON, D.C. – This afternoon, after more than 29 hours of floor activity and Republican infighting, House Republicans jammed through H.R. 1, their Big Ugly Bill that will gut Medicaid, strip food assistance programs, and give massive tax breaks to the richest people and corporations. Upon passage of this devastating legislation that rips healthcare away from 17 million Americans and decimates SNAP, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver (NJ-10), who voted against the bill, released the following statement:
“Every single Republican who helped pass this bill should be ashamed of their vote, and every single American should remember exactly what the GOP has told us today: unless you are among the wealthiest, you do not matter to them.
“When I was elected to Congress, I promised New Jersey’s 10th that I would fight for them. We fought this bill until the end and will work to undo the damage this will cause for our country and communities—no matter how long it takes.
“The cruelty of this bill cannot be separated from the cruelty of the Republican party that created it—a party that worked to strip 17 million Americans of healthcare, raise our energy bills, and gut food assistance, all to please Donald Trump.”
