McIver Bashes Billionaire Shutdown Threat, Supports Workers

December 19, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ-10) released the following statement on the Republican government shutdown threat, perpetuated by Elon Musk and Donald Trump:

“The richest man in the world is trying to prevent millions of workers from doing their jobs and getting paid and House Republicans are doing nothing to stop it,” said Rep. McIver. “A government shutdown would hurt seniors and families, and force servicemembers and first responders to work without pay over the holidays. If we shut down, New Jersey families could lose out on $439 million in disaster relief funding, and essential programs like food assistance and small business aid could be dragged to a halt. This is reckless and irresponsible governance from the GOP, who killed a bipartisan solution to play political games with the lives of the American people—they need to stop.”

Background:

  • If the government shuts down, more than 2 million military personnel and millions of federal workers will have their pay delayed, according to the Partnership for Public Service.
  • Approximately 380,000 federal employees were furloughed during the 2018-2019 government shutdown.
  • The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the 2018-2019 shutdown delayed approximately $18 billion in federal discretionary spending.

Rep. LaMonica McIver represents New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District. Rep. McIver is the first Black woman to represent NJ-10 and the youngest ever to be elected to the United States House of Representatives from New Jersey. She is a member of the House Small Business and Homeland Security Committees.
